what is a union

The United Food And Commercial Workers is a family of workers who stick up for each other and fight side by side to make the workplace a better place.

The UFCW is about workers coming together to build better lives – now and for the future. It’s about getting a fair paycheck this week and a good schedule next week. It’s about being treated with respect. It’s about having a decent job where we all have a say, so the boss can’t push us around.

Whether we decide to stay and work for a few years while we’re in school, for our whole career, or even just right now, together we are a strong union – and we have a voice on the job. Together we can stand up for ourselves – negotiate better wages and benefits, quality healthcare and safe working conditions – and make sure everyone’s treated fairly.

In the United Food and Commercial Workers, workers are the union. Workers come together on the job; nominate and elect union officers and leaders to represent their collective voice; determine what will be fought for in the contract, and together, we fight to make the workplace and our communities better.

The more workers join together for the good of all, the more management listens to what we have to say. In a Union there is strength. With a union, you negotiate numerous other benefits guaranteed in a union contract, such as,

  • Wages, health care, and retirement plans so we can make our jobs careers
  • Job security, so you can’t be fired for just any reason.
  • Protection from favoritism, to be sure everyone is treated with respect.

Other important workplace issues are negotiated, too like:

  • Work schedules
  • How to resolve problems at work
  • Reasonable workload requirements
  • Workplace safety protections and training
  • Seniority rights
  • And a voice on the job to bargain for other benefits
